Kelly Sheffield, 2019 Big Ten Coach of the Year and NCAA Championship runner-up at Wisconsin, demonstrates a magnitude of drills that challenge players to "out-think" their opponents. By serving with confident, hard driven serves, your team can immediately rattle your opponents. You'll get serving strategies plus some of Sheffield's best 6-on-6 drills for practice!
Confidence from the Serve Line
Coach Sheffield encourages players to practice competing daily from the serve line in order to gain confidence and a more aggressive style in their serving approach. Sheffield provides his philosophy and techniques for "driving and dropping" from the serve line in order for your whole team to be more competitive with their serve.
Next, Sheffield presents a basic serve progression that will allow your players to increase their aggressive approach to serving. By using tape on the gym floor as a guide, athletes will have a better understanding of what their body does or does not do during the serve process. Players become more mindful of "how they feel" by repeating these skills daily.
You'll learn how to instruct your team to serve a flatter, driven ball. Additionally, you'll get game speed serving progressions to help develop confidence using driven serves.
Tactical Strategies that Work
With his 6-on-6 drill segments, Coach Sheffield explains how tactical serving can stress your opponent and create situations that offer great scoring opportunities. An emphasis for servers is that with the knowledge of where to serve to an opponent, scenarios can be created that will make your defenders' jobs easier.
In all, you will see how to:
- Explain responsibilities for your defensive counter attack.
- Shrink the opponent's court based on where they serve.
- Encourage your players to disrupt the opponent's attack methods by understanding their tendencies.
The main 6-on-6 drills presented in this video can be altered to emphasize specific skills that fit your team's needs. All of the drills encourage players to continue to develop an aggressive mentality while focusing on in-game situations.
Coach Sheffield does an excellent job in presenting aggressive serve techniques as well as easy-to-understand progressions. This video will provide you with practice drills that work on the aggressive serving concept while also incorporating game-like strategies involving your athletes' total skill package. A must-add for your collection!
