Serve receive is a crucial part of the game of volleyball. If you can't serve receive effectively, you can't put your offense in a place to score! Well-executed offenses can only happen if the team has strong serve receive fundamentals.
Using a progression of serve receive practice drills, Travis Hudson demonstrates multiple drills to work on fundamental skills. In order to be able to perform the skills when asked, each part of the game must be comfortable so that confidence is present when asked to perform the drill in a high-pressure situation. If players aren't comfortable, confidence fades.
Breakdown Drills to Defend the Ball Screen
Learn how to use breakdown stations to teach fundamental techniques for all players. Coach Hudson explains the teaching points he emphasizes for all of the fundamentals in volleyball:
- How to manipulate hand to ball contact when hitting
- Importance of pace and contact when serving
- Platform and footwork importance when passing
Practice Segments
With his instruction on serving, Hudson emphasis three key components: pace is not good with a bad contact, contact is not good with a bad pace, and both are not good if the location is bad. Focusing on getting comfortable with a consistent contact point and pace is key to becoming consistent and effective servers.
Hitting and blocking progression stations help create an effective defensive and offensive team. Coach Hudson uses cues to help remind players of important moves such as:
- Arm Drive - using the hitting machine
- Rip and Up
- Quick off the ground
Coach Hudson gives you everything you need to know about serve receive. You will also learn techniques in other areas of the game that will be a solid foundation to turn your players into a highly skilled team!
